Petőfi Sándor: ~ újabb költeményei. 1847-1849. I-II. kötet.
Pest, 1858. Emich. (8)+284+IVp., (2)+288+IV+(1)p.
First edition, published after the poet's death. The publisher took over the manuscripts from Julia Szendrey in the summer of 1850. These contained the smaller poems written between 1847 and 1849 and the larger narrative poems (The Apostle, Foolish Gods, Chief Lehel, Mária Szécsi). Revolutionary poems were out of the question in the political situation, but censorship was in operation for the rest. In October, a subscription to Petőfi's new poems was announced, which generated a huge press response, and the public was also looking forward to the publication of the new work with heightened expectations. Perhaps as a result, when the printing work was almost completed, the authorities invaded the printing house, seized the unbound sheets and later crushed them. Emich finally had to wait seven years for this book of poems to be published and reach readers.
Richly gilt, original cloth.
