Biró, (Mihály) Michael: Horthy. Dessins par ~.
(Wien), 1920. (Anzengruber-Verlag.). 20 separate sheets (lithographs).
Mihaly Biro is probably the best-known Hungarian graphic designer from his era. Some consider him the founder of political poster art. The Red Man with the Hammer became the symbol of the turbulent years of the late 1910s in Hungary. Because of his serious role in the Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919, he had to flee to Vienna after the collapse of the communist regime. He did not stop working in the Austrian capital though: he made numerous political, commercial, and even film posters and prepared graphics for various papers. Above all, he composed his notorious Horthy album. Biro’s purpose with this album was to depict “the atrocities of the White Terror”. He based his work on the narratives of other emigrants and the report made by the delegation of the British Trade Union Congress and the Labour Party. Despite this – or for this very reason – the historical authenticity of the pictures should be questioned. The exact data are unknown, but presumably, the album was printed in limited numbers, although it was high in demand. In the same year, it was published again in a smaller form, then in 1946, it was republished again in Buenos Aires.
Slightly damaged, illustrated, original paper folder.
