Eötvös József, báró: A nemzetiségi kérdés

As a minister in the Batthyány government, Eötvös already understood the importance of the nationality issue. Later, he dealt with the subject in several works. During the National Assembly of 1861, he participated in preparing the Nationality Act, but it was not discussed due to the dissolution of the parliament. This work can be considered a summary of his views on nationality politics. Alongside the principles of freedom and equality, he describes the idea of nationality as the most decisive factor of the period. He also sees a solution for the nationalities in consistently enforcing the 1848 laws and granting local autonomy. Posterity may perhaps blame him for assuming that nationalist politicians were willing to compromise and seek agreement.
