Matthew Hale Smith unitárius lelkész, újságíró, író. Portlandben született 1810-ben, 1879-ben halt meg Brooklynban, New York államban. Újságtudósítóként „Burleigh” néven szerzett hírnevet. Sikeres előadótúrákat is tett. Írásai közé tartozik: „Universalism Exposed” (1842), „Az univerzalizmus nem Istentől” (1847), „Szombat esték” (1849), „Kolvária hegy” (1866), és a „Sunshine and Shadow [Fény és árnyék] in New York” (1868–69).
Korabeli, a gerincén javított egészbőr-kötésben, aranyozott gerincvignettákkal, megkímélt, jó állapotban.
