It was first published in 1842 in three volumes. Táncsics originally planned a periodical-like series, but it failed at the time. Following this edition, the authorities started proceedings against the author, so he hid on the Slavonic estate of Count Kázmér Batthyány in Brod. He was captured in March 1847 and then convicted. On March 15, 1848, the citizens of Pest freed him from the castle prison in Buda.
